The time finally arrived for Chris and Simon to do the Virgin Active Triathlon. They had been training for months and their time to shine was finally here. Chris started his swim, cycle and running competition at 07:30 on Sunday the 28th of July, and Simon at 08:00 in the morning.
The Virgin Active Triathlon is the largest and most established Triathlon in the world. With 13,000 triathletes competing against one another across two days.
Before starting their race, they were provided with a security wristbands, two bike numbers, one for their helmet and the other for their bike handlebars, and finally a race number for the run at the end of the race.
You can view the course map here:
Simon managed to finish his 1500 meter swim in 50 minutes and 14 seconds, the 40 km bike ride took him 1 hour, 17 minutes and 24 seconds and the 10 km run at the end of the race took him 1 hour, 6 minutes and 22 seconds. He completed the Triathlon in under 3 hours and 30 minutes – an incredible achievement for a first time Triathlon!
Chris, having a few Triathlons under his belt, finished his swim in 25 minutes and 36 seconds, his biking in just one hour, eight minutes and 26 seconds and his 10km run took him 54 minutes making his final time: 2 hours, 37 minutes and 6 seconds. He ranked 300th out of 6,000 entrants and came in the top 50 for his age group in the Olympic race.
Amazing efforts on both sides. They have definitely motivated some members of the TechQuarters Team to start entering races in the future.
